Purpose:To evaluate the efficacy and safety of fluconazole (Diflucan, ) in the treatment of invasive functial infections (FIC) in pediatric patients. Prospective, randomized, double-blind clinical study. One-hundred and fifty patients with invasive functitis caused by susceptible strains ofCorynebacterium dificinumwere randomly assigned to fluconazole (1,000 mg) or doxycycline (800 mg) for 4 weeks. The primary outcome was clinical cure rate and the secondary outcome was clinical cure rate. At the end of treatment, patients were monitored, and a total of 240 patients were enrolled. Of the 240 patients, 150 (76%) were treated with the fluconazole and 200 (74%) were treated with the doxycycline group. The incidence of serious adverse reactions was significantly higher in the fluconazole group (35.6% vs. 16.3%, p<0.01) (Fisher's exact test, p<0.01). The proportion of patients with a complete clinical cure of FIC in the fluconazole group was higher than that in the doxycycline group (44.5% vs. 25.1%, p<0.01) (Fisher's exact test, p<0.01). The rate of patients with a partial clinical cure was higher in the fluconazole group (35.6% vs. 17.7%, p<0.01). There was no difference in the incidence of major adverse reactions between the groups. Fluconazole is a safe and effective oral treatment for invasive functial infections. There is a need for further research to determine its long-term efficacy and safety.
Patient population:The patients were from a tertiary center in Singapore. The study was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Central District Hospital, Singapore. I have been on diflucan for a few years and was recently prescribed a dose of 250 mg and a day for a liver transplant. I took it on Friday night and was told by a pharmacist that I was experiencing side effects and that I was going to have to take it again. I took the 250 mg dose on Saturday night and on Monday night, I was told that the side effects were so bad I couldn't eat. The side effects went away on Sunday, but the drug is still being prescribed because I have never had a liver transplant and I just had some bad headaches that lasted for four hours. I can't remember if I have ever taken it before or not.
My doctors say that the side effects are due to a decrease in the amount of urine produced. I can't think of any other reason why this could happen, and I've never had a liver transplant. I am on diflucan from the day that I take it to the day I stop taking it.
I have been on diflucan for about three months now. I have been taking it for six months now and it has been fine.
